This manual, that is a result of a Dutch research programme recommends a number of measures for an mechanical weed control.  A good result of mechanical weed control start with preventive measures such as crop rotation, false seedbed, sowing or planting methods, undersowing and intercropping,  harrowing after sowing and before crop emergence and the use of mulches. Information about damage caused by weeds, their dispersal, and problems with weeds is given. This manual can be used as assistance in decision-making. Which farm machinery can be used, depending on crop stage and the size of the weeds.

Farm machinery is described on principle, feasible settings and particulars of each type of farmmachinery. Following this manual an adequate mechanical weed control should be the result.

Summary
A reduction of the pesticides input in potato can be achieved by optimizing the dose rate of fungicides by making use of the level of resistance of varieties against late blight. In 5-years research the possibilities to reduce the dose rate of Shirlan on varieties with a higher level of resistance was tested. The result was that in the more resistant varieties a reduction up to 75 percent was possible in the first half of the growing season (leaf growth). Essential is that the fungicide is sprayed before a critical period and that the resistance level of a variety is reliable. The use of a decision support system can be a great help by determine critical periods. In the second half of the growing season, when the risk for tuber blight is present, the possibilities to reduce the dose rate of Shirlan is limited.
